TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team announced its captains for the 2021-22 season on Monday.
Sophomore Yaniah Curry, junior Quinesha Lockett, junior Sophia Wiard, and junior Hannah Noveroske were all voted team captains by their teammates for the Rockets' upcoming campaign
"All four of our captains are very wise choices by our team," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "They are all outstanding teammates, leaders, and ambassadors for our program."
Quinesha Lockett (Omaha, Neb.) was a third-team All-MAC selection last season, averaging 19.6 points per game across 24 contests. Lockett's scoring average was the seventh-highest ever by a Rocket and the highest since 1998-99 (Kim Knuth, 25.4 points per game). She also averaged 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.0 steals er game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Lockett scored in double figures in all but one game and had three 30-point scoring efforts. She was named MVP at the team's end-of-the-season banquet.
Sophia Wiard (Muskegon, Mich.) started all 24 games last season, averaging 13.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while leading the MAC in assist/turnover ratio (1.9). Wiard turned in one of the most explosive offensive performances in school history last year, tying a program-record with 42 points at Northern Illinois (Dec. 10), shooting 16-for-25 from the field and making 7-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Wiard reached double figures in scoring in all but two games and registered two double-doubles on the season. The Academic All-MAC honoree was also bestowed the "Ultimate Rocket" award by the team, which is annually given to the player that excels on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
Hannah Noveroske (Michigan City, Ind.) played two seasons at Big Ten-member Indiana, appearing in 25 games as a freshman and sophomore. This past year, she appeared in 10 games for an IU squad that reached the NCAA's Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Noveroske starred at Michigan City (Ind.) High School, averaging 21.9 points per game and 12.2 rebounds per game for a team that went 20-5. She is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,790 career points and she was a two-time Times of Northwest Indiana Athlete of the Year for Porter/LaPorte Counties. Noveroske averaged 20.6 points per game, 15.7 rebounds per game, and 6.9 blocks per game as a junior and collected 18.6 points per game and 13.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
Yaniah Curry (Cottleville, Mo.) played in 20 games last season, scoring a season-high eight points against Kent State (Feb. 8) and pulling down a season-best four rebounds on two occasions (vs. Oakland on Nov. 29, vs. Buffalo on Feb. 10). An Academic All-MAC honoree, Curry also earned the Team's Academic Award last year and has been the team's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative each of the last two seasons.
The Rockets open their 2021-22 season at Oakland on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Toledo's home opener is slated for Saturday, Nov. 13 against Wright State.Â
