ATHENS, Ohio – Toledo (6-2, 2-2 MAC) will look to return to its winning ways when it ventures to Ohio (4-3, 2-2 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 9. The opening tip against the Bobcats is slated for 1:00 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
The Rockets and Bobcats will meet only once during the regular season and for the 73rd time overall. Ohio is one of two MAC teams Toledo will play just one time, with Miami being the other.
Toledo leads the all-time series vs. Ohio, 46-26, and has won two of the last three meetings. The Bobcats do hold a slim 18-15 edge in games played in the Convo.
A year ago, the Rockets suffered an 86-58 road loss against the Bobcats in Athens (Feb. 19). The teams were also scheduled to play in the MAC Tournament Semifinals in Cleveland, but the neutral-site contest was canceled due to safety concerns about the Coronavirus.
The Rockets, who are 1-1 away from home, had their season-tying best three-game win streak snapped at Ball State on Wednesday. Sophomore Quinesha Lockett poured in a career-high 34 points, while classmate Sophia Wiard registered 23. The Rockets' dynamic duo were also credited with six assists each against the Cardinals (4-4, 2-2 MAC). As a team, the Midnight Blue & Gold shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the field vs. BSU, including a season-high 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from three-point range. Toledo has now made at least 10 triples in two of the last three games.
Oshlynn Brown paced five Cardinals in double digits with 24 points and a game-high 13 boards. Brown's strong play inside helped BSU post a sizable 52-30 edge in points in the paint. Sydney Freeman added 18 points, followed closely by the trio of Thelma Dis Agustsdottir, Anna Clephane and Essence Booker with 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Through the first eight contests, Lockett and Wiard lead four Rockets scoring at least 9.0 ppg at 18.89 and 18.25, the eighth- and ninth-highest totals in the league. Toledo is one of only two teams with a pair of players in the MAC's Top 10 in scoring, with Ohio being the other.
Toledo will square off against an Ohio squad which is coming off a 72-63 road victory at Miami (1-7, 0-4 MAC) on Wednesday. The Bobcats broke open a close game by outscoring the RedHawks 28-13 in the third period to snap a mini two-game losing skid. Two-time reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Year Cece Hooks paced the Bobcats with 26 points and a season-high five steals, while Gabby Burris and Erica Johnson had 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Ohio, which is 2-1 at home in 2020-21, utilizes a high-powered offense with two players contributing at least 22.0 ppg led by Hooks and Johnson at 25.1 and 22.3 ppg, respectively. The Bobcats are currently leading the MAC in scoring offense (79.57 ppg), as well as ranking second in overall field-goal percentage (.427, 190-of-445).
Following tomorrow's contest, the Rockets will host Western Michigan (1-5, 0-4 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 13. The opening tip vs. the Broncos is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
