TOLEDO, Ohio – Sophomores Quinesha Lockett, Mali Morgan-Elliott and Sophia Wiard have been named captains for the Rockets' 2020-21 season, Head Coach Tricia Cullop announced on Monday. The trio was selected based on votes by their teammates and staff.
"We are excited to announce our three captains for the upcoming season," said Cullop, the winningest coach in school history. "Quinesha, Mali and Sophia all played significant roles for us last year. They have done a terrific job in the preseason leading both vocally and by example and earned this opportunity. I have every confidence in their abilities."
Lockett, a 5-foot-10 wing, started 24 of the 31 games in 2019-20, averaging 9.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 26.1 minutes. She ranked second on the team in offensive caroms (54), tied for second in thefts (36), third in field-goals made (110), minutes played (806) and games started, fourth in scoring and rejections (7) and fifth in three-point field-goals made (19). The Omaha, Neb. native also scored in double figures on 15 occasions last year, the fourth-highest total on the team, including a season-high 20 points against arch-rival Bowling Green (Jan. 18). The team's "Best Defensive Player" award honoree, Lockett paced the squad in steals on a team-high 12 occasions, scoring five times, blocked shots on four occasions and rebounding three times.
"It's an honor that my teammates trust me enough to put me in this position," Lockett said. "It's a big step up from last year for me, but I'm going to do everything I can to keep that trust and help the team our goals."Â
Morgan-Elliott, a 5-foot-9 forward, tallied 3.2 points and 2.0 boards in 14.6 minutes per game in her first season wearing the Midnight Blue & Gold. The Dayton, Ohio native finished fourth on the squad in overall field-goal percentage (.410). She also scored in double figures on two occasions in 2019-20, registering a season-high 12 points and a season-best six caroms in 25 minutes at Detroit Mercy (Dec. 14).
"I'm so excited to be chosen as a captain by my teammates," Morgan-Elliott said. "I'm honored to represent my team, our great fans, and my University."Â
Wiard, a 5-foot-7 guard, contributed 3.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 dimes in 15.0 minutes per game a season ago. The Muskegon, Mich. native paced the team in free throw percentage (.855, 47-of-55), as well as finishing third in assists (60), fourth in free throws made (47) and fifth in field-goal percentage (.400) and defensive boards (59).
"I'm extremely humbled to be selected as a team captain," Wiard said. "I'm thankful to be surrounded by such talented players who believe in me to lead us on and off the court. I will continue to lead in every way I know."
