Toledo Heads to Akron in First Round of MAC Tourney

AKRON, Ohio  - No. 9 seed Toledo (12-17) opens the 2020 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Monday, March 9 with a first-round contest at No. 8 seed Akron (15-14). The opening tip from James A. Rhodes Arena is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN3.
The winner of tomorrow's contest will meet No. 1 seed Central Michigan (23-6) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 11 at Noon in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
The Rockets finished the 2019-20 conference campaign tied for fifth in the West Division standings, while the Zips placed fourth in the East Division.
The cross-division foes have squared off on seven occasions in the post-season tourney, with Toledo holding a 5-2 (.714) edge. Most recently, the Rockets secured an impressive 65-37 home triumph against the Zips in the first round of the 2017 MAC Tournament at home (March 6).Â
Toledo and Akron will meet for the second time this year and and 58th time overall. The Rockets claimed a 65-61 home victory against the Zips on Jan. 15 before 3,739 fans in Savage Arena.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 43-14, and has won four of its last five meetings against UA. The Rockets also hold 16-8 (.667) edge in games played in the "Rubber City."Â
The Rockets, who are 5-10 away from home this year, are coming off an 86-79 home setback against Northern Illinois (11-18) on Saturday.
Senior Mariella Santucci was one of a season-tying best five Rockets in double figures against the Huskies, finishing with 20 points and a game-high nine assists. Junior Nakiah Black and junior Tanaya Beacham added 16 points each, while junior Tatyana Davis and freshman Quinesha Lockett both contributed 10.
As a team, Toledo shot a respectable 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the floor, including 34.3 percent (MAC season-high 12-of-35) from three-point range, and dished out a league-season high 22 assists.
Courtney Woods paced NIU with a game- and season-high 36 points, followed by Chelby Koker with a season-tying best 17 points off the bench. A major factor in Northern Illinois picking up only its second road win against Toledo in the "Glass City" over the last 12 years came at the charity stripe, as the visitors shot 23-of-26 (88.5 percent), compared to 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) for Toledo.
Toledo continues to be fueled offensively by the quartet of Black, Santucci, Beacham and Lockett, who are averaging 11.8, 11.1, 10.5 and 9.3 ppg, respectively. This foursome account for 63.6 percent (1,228-of-1,930) of Toledo's scoring.
