OPELIKA, Ala. – Senior Grant Godfrey matched his career best round with a three-under par 69 on Sunday to lead the Toledo men's golf team to a strong showing in the opening round of Auburn's Tiger Invitational. The Rockets are tied for sixth place in the 19-team field after shooting a four-over par 292 at the par-72, 7,289-yard Grand National Lake Course.
"It was encouraging to see our guys battle through some moments that might have derailed them in the past," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "It's always a positive when real growth happens."
Â
Godfrey is tied for third place in the individual standings and is just one stroke behind leaders Jackson Wedgeworth (UNA) and C.J. Easley (Auburn). No. 15 Auburn leads the field at nine-under par 279, one stroke in front of Louisiana-Monroe.
Â
Godfrey opened his day with a double bogey but responded with three birdies to hit the turn at one-under par. After a bogey on the 14th hole left Godfrey at even par, he birdied and eagled the next two holes to get to three-under.
Â
Sophomore Mohammed Afif Mohd Fathi notched Toledo's second-best round today at one-over par 73 (T-30th), while senior Nate Thomson (T-45th) and sophomore David Amm (T-45th) finished at two-over par 74. Senior Rasmus Broholt Lind (T-54th) rounded out the Rocket lineup at four-over par 76.
Â
Toledo's tee times in tomorrow's second round will begin at 9:03 a.m. The final round will be played on Tuesday.
