MUNCIE, Ind. – Toledo (11-14, 6-8 MAC) returns to the road on Wednesday, Feb. 26 for a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup at Ball State (18-8, 10-4 MAC). Wednesday's contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Worthen Arena and will be streamed on ESPN3.Â
The Midnight Blue & Gold currently sit in a tie for seventh place with Akron (13-12, 6-8 MAC) in the overall MAC standings with only four regular-season contests remaining. Fortunately for the Rockets, they own the tiebreaker against the Zips, as they claimed a 65-61 home victory on Jan. 15.
Â
If the MAC Tournament started before tomorrow's contest, Toledo would be the No. 7 seed and host No. 10 seed Miami (11-15, 4-10 MAC) in a first-round game on Monday, March 9.
Â
Toledo and Ball State will meet for the second time in the last two weeks and 84th overall. The Rockets suffered a 60-58 home setback against the Cardinals on Feb. 12 to snap a three-game winning streak in the series.
In what was a tightly-contested game that featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes, the Rockets had a couple opportunities in the waning seconds of regulation to force overtime, but shots from junior
Tatyana Davis and classmate
Tanaya Beacham were off the mark.Â
Senior
Mariella Santucci paced Toledo with a game-high 16 points and in the process became the 30th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Santucci knocked down a pair of throws at the 3:44 mark in the fourth quarter to join the Rockets' exclusive club.Â
Toledo leads the all-time series against BSU, 57-26, and has won five of the last seven contests against its division rival. In addition, the Rockets have won two of their last three road games against the Cardinals and hold a 24-15 advantage in contests played in Muncie. A year ago, Toledo claimed a 63-62 road victory vs. BSU in Worthen Arena (Feb. 23).
The Rockets will look to end a slide tomorrow that has seen them drop four-consecutive games. In Saturday's 70-58 home setback vs. Western Michigan, the visiting Broncos (15-10, 8-6 MAC) outscored Toledo 35-25 in the second half to claim their first win in the "Glass City" since 2014.
Freshman
Quinesha Lockett led Toledo with 17 points, followed by Beacham and Santucci with 13 and 12, respectively. The home team also received eight points and a team-high seven caroms from Black.
A 2019-20 team captain, Beacham has now scored in double figures in a season-tying best three-straight games, averaging a team-high 15.0 ppg.
Jordan Walker led WMU with a game-high 21 points to help the Broncos sweep the regular-season series from Toledo for the first time since 2013-14.
The Rockets, which sport a 5-8 road record, currently have four players averaging at least 10.0 points in MAC play. Black and Sanutcci lead the way at 12.1 ppg, while Lockett and Beacham are contributing 10.5 and 10.1 ppg, respectively.
Toledo will face a Ball State squad which had its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 61-58 road loss at Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Syndey Freeman led the Cardinals with 14 points, followed by Oshlynn Brown with 11 points and a game-tying high 12 boards.
BSU, which is 10-1 at home, features a balance offense with four players contributing at least 9.8 points, led by Brown's 13.2 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
Following tomorrow's road matchup, Toledo will travel to MAC West Division rival Eastern Michigan (13-12, 8-6 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 29. The MAC West Division showdown is slated for 2:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center and will be streamed on ESPN3.Â
The Rockets and Eagles will meet for the second time this year and 86th overall. Toledo suffered a 77-62 home setback against EMU on Jan. 29 to snap a three-game winning streak in the series.
