DeKALB, Ill. – Toledo (6-7, 1-1 MAC) will look to build off a hard-fought victory vs. Buffalo when the Midnight Blue & Gold travels to Mid-American Conference West Division rival Northern Illinois (4-9, 0-2 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 11. The opening tip against the Huskies is slated for 1:00 p.m. (CT) in the Convocation Center and will be streamed on ESPN3.
The Rockets are coming off an impressive 71-59 triumph over the reigning MAC champion Bulls on Wednesday to extend their home winning streak to three-consecutive games.
Junior Tanaya Beacham paced Toledo with 17 points off the bench, followed by freshman Quinesha Lockett with 13 points and a season-high seven rebounds to run its record to 12-1 all-time against UB (10-3, 1-1 MAC) at home.
As a team, Toledo shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the floor, including a respectable 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from beyond the arc. The Rockets also did a fantastic job taking care of the basketball against the athletic Bulls, finishing with 15 assists, compared to only 13 turnovers.Â
As efficient as the Rockets were offensively, their defensive effort was even better. They limited UB to 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field, including 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from three-point land, en route to holding them to their second-lowest scoring output this season.Â
Toledo, which is 3-4 away from home this year, features a balanced attack with junior Nakiah Black, senior Mariella Santucci, Beacham and junior Tatyana Davis averaging 11.5, 9.7, 9.5 and 8.0 ppg, respectively.
The Rockets will tangle with a Northern Illinois team that is in the midst of a four-game losing skid, most recently suffering a 66-64 road setback at Miami on Wednesday. The RedHawks tallied a whopping 37 points off 25 NIU turnovers to post the come-from-behind home triumph vs. the Huskies. 2019-20 Preseason All-MAC West Division Team honoree Courtney Woods paced NIU with a game-high 23 points, while Ally May had nine points and a game-high 11 boards.Â
NIU, which is 1-3 at home, also utilizes a balanced offense with five players contributing at least 6.0 ppg led by Woods' 16.8 ppg.Â
Toledo and Northern Illinois will meet for the first of two matchups during the regular season and 57th time overall. The Rockets will host NIU on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
Toledo leads the all-time series against Northern Illinois, 35-21, but has lost two of the last three meetings against its division foe. The Huskies also hold an 15-11 edge in games played in DeKalb.Â
A year ago, the teams split their two meetings with the home team emerging victorious each time. The Rockets secured a 64-53 home triumph against the Huskies in Savage Arena (March 2) and suffered a 54-52 road setback in the Convocation Center (Feb. 16).
Following Saturday's MAC West Division matchup at NIU, Toledo will entertain MAC East Division foe Akron (7-6, 0-2 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The cross-division showdown is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be televised on ESPN+.
