Toledo Leaves its Mark in Birthplace of Aviation

Dayton, Ohio - The Toledo softball team (19-23) won a non-conference twinbill against Dayton (21-22) today as the Rockets fought to 7-5 and 9-2 victories over the Flyers in Dayton, Ohio. Numerous milestones and achievements were reached today, including junior Samantha Golden hitting her first collegiate home run in game two. All in all, four Rockets left the park on the day, Toledo never trailed in either competition, and six milestones were reached.

Senior Heather Webb threw her second complete game of the year, finishing game one with eight Ks and just one walk. Sophomore Maggie McGurk earned her seventh win as she went four innings in game two before allowing junior Leah Allison to come in and earn the save.

How it happened
Game 1:
Toledo started hot in the first game of the day and never showed signs of slowing despite UD's ability to force the contest into extra innings. Sophomore Raelyn Nyren was hit by a pitch for the 12th time this season, tying for second-most times HBP in a single season at Toledo. The victory was also senior Heather Webb's first win of the year.

  • Senior Katie Cozy kicked off the day by hitting her sixth homer of the season in her first at-bat of the day to score two runs.
  • After the Rockets took UD down in order in the bottom of the opening frame, Toledo came back to score two more in the second thanks to Cozy and sophomore Bekah Yenrick. With the bases loaded, Cozy earned an RBI after getting a free base on balls. Yenrick then followed with a sac fly to score one and make it 4-0 Toledo.
  • Heather Webb then shined in the bottom of the inning as she tied up three straight batters.
  • Things chilled for an inning and a half until Dayton broke the shutout thanks to Abby Ehrenborg who doubled with two on to cut the Rockets' lead in half.
  • Another double from Morgan Mateja three batters later scored one from third base to make things 4-3 Toledo.
  • The Flyers then tied the game in the sixth on a double steal that picked off the first base runner but gave the third base runner enough room to slip in.
  • Toledo would go on to put two on the bags in the seventh as Bergman walked and Yenrick doubled, but they were left standing there after two fly outs and a grounder to third. The Flyers put one on the bases in the bottom, but the scoring chance was nullified as Toledo's defense stranded her.
  • The Rockets took the game on a huge eighth-inning display of power. With freshman Brianna Robeson placed on second, Nyren hit a sac bunt to put her on third. A walk from sophomore Kylie Norwood then put runners in the corners, and Robeson would go on to score thanks to a successful double steal that put UT up 5-4. Senior Megan Choate then doubled up the left side to score Norwood. The Rockets' final run came in as Cozy singled to center, scoring Choate. A groundout, fly out, and line out from Dayton in the bottom of the inning would secure the first win of the day for Toledo.

Game 2:
The Midnight Blue and Gold kept its foot on the gas in the nightcap as batter after batter left their mark in the Birthplace of Aviation. Choate homered for the 11th time in her career to tie with Brooke Gates (2009-12) for ninth all-time at Toledo. Bergman hit her 20th career dinger to both tie for fourth-most home runs all-time at Toledo with Erica Singer (2004-08) while also moving into fourth place for most homers in a single season. The day was capped off by Golden leaving the park for the first time since joining the Rockets.

  • The latter game of the twinbill had a slower start as scoring didn't open until the third frame. Toledo loaded the bases as Norwood was HBP, Cozy singled and Bergman was walked. Yenrick then stepped up and earned a free base on five pitches to bring in Norwood.
  • Junior Morgan Paaverud then singled up the gut to score Cozy before the final out was made, leaving three on the bases but giving Toledo its second 2-0 lead of the day.
  • The Flyers immediately responded in the bottom of the inning as Ellie Ziegler hit into a two-on fielder's choice that scored one before the final out was made.
  • The Rockets extended their lead to 4-1 in the next inning as Choate homered with Norwood on first. Cozy then singled to right field to set up another scoring opportunity but was left their as the next batters flew out.
  • The fourth-inning runs mostly took the wind out of Dayton's sails as Toledo went on to dominate the remainder of the game, adding five runs in the final two innings while forcing UD to leave 5 runners on base between the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.
  • The Rockets put three up in the sixth off of Bergman who hit a three-run dinger over the left field fence to score Choate and Norwood and make the score 7-1 Toledo. Golden then led off the seventh with her dinger, and Toledo closed the game with a single from Cozy that scored one.
