Kent, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's track and field team wrapped up the final day of competition in the 2019 Indoor Track and Field Mid-American Conference Championships today. The Rockets earned three gold medals throughout the week and set six personal records, ending the weekend fourth overall with 69 points.
Day two of competition was highlighted by senior
Shanice Williams defending her title in the 60m dash while also setting a new personal record after finishing in 7.37. The Rockets' other two gold medals came on day one from junior
Athena Welsh winning the 5K and sophomoreÂ
Atalia Lima winning the pentathlon.Â
"I think we had a really good weekend," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "There were a couple places where we thought we missed a couple points, but there were also some where we got some unexpected points. You can't really be too nit-picky, I just think the women came in and competed hard and we had a really good weekend, the second-highest finish in Toledo history, so I think coming out you got to be pretty happy."
Â
Seniors
Petronela Simiuc and
Janelle Noe took third (2:10.33) and fourth (2:10.79),  respectively in the 800-meters. Noe finished third in the mile (4:44.93), with Simiuc taking fifth (4:49.57) and junior
Athena Welsh taking sixth (4:50.15). Welsh went on to take fourth in the 3K with a time of 9:48.8. Welsh was joined on the podium with senior
Jennifer Lichter, who placed eighth (9:55.77).Â
"Petronela PR'ed and Janelle came close to her PR. For them both to do that in their fourth race of the weekend is pretty impressive," said Nguyen. "Athena, similarly, ran almost 10,000 meters-worth of races, and for her to run as well as she did in the mile and 3K today, especially a 3K as the last one, that just shows how talented and how strong those women are"Â
Â
The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of
Nautica Hill,
Christina Johnson,
Emily Worley,
Rayna Horner landed eighth with a time of 3:38.49.Â
Â
In the shot put senior
Katie Dewey took sixth with a heave of 14.90m.Â
