CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior center Luke Knapke has been named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Knapke's honor marks the second time he has earned the weekly accolade this season and the third time in his Rocket career.
Knapke had a week to remember for Toledo last week by averaging 22.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 1.5 assists per game in double-digit wins over Cleveland State and Marshall. He also posted efficient shooting numbers with a 66.7 FG% (16-of-24), 54.5 three-point FG% (6-of-11) and 87.5 FT% (7-of-8) to extend the Rockets' winning streak to four games.
Knapke opened the week by registering the third triple-double in school history, tallying 12 points, 12 rebounds and a school-record 10 blocked shots (2nd in MAC history) in an 80-65 win at Cleveland State. He also became Toledo's all-time leader in blocked shots during the win over the Vikings and now has 163 in his collegiate career.
The Maria Stein, Ohio native then carried the Rockets to an 82-72 home win over Marshall by scoring a career-high 33 points, to go along with 11 rebounds. He was 12-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Knapke's 33 points is the most by a Rocket since Tyrone Kent poured in 37 at Xavier on Nov. 17, 2008.
Knapke is the only Rocket to score in double figures in every game this season and ranks second on the team with 16.8 ppg and 9.1 rpg. He also is tied for first in the MAC with a team-best 3.0 bpg.
Knapke and the Rockets (7-2) will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 when they travel to the "Motor City" to face Detroit Mercy. Tip-off time for the contest is set for 3:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall.
