OXFORD, Ohio – Toledo suffered a tough 65-64 setback at Miami on Wednesday in a Mid-American Conference cross-division match-up in Millett Hall. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 9-4 overall, 1-1 in the league.
UT had the ball under its own basket and trailed 65-62 with 4.6 seconds left. Senior
Mikaela Boyd took the ball the length of the floor and passed it to junior
Sara Rokkanen on the wing. The Finland native had a good look at a game-tying triple, but her shot was long. Sophomore
Tatyana Davis grabbed the offensive rebound out of the air and scored a layup as a horn sounded to make the final score 65-64.
Senior
Kaayla McIntyre paced UT with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds to surpass the 20-point plateau for a squad-best fourth time this year.
Rokkanen added a season-high 13 points off the bench and sophomore
Nakiah Black had 10, as Toledo's three-game winning streak came to an end.
As a team, the Rockets shot a respectable 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from three-point land, but they were limited to 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the charity stripe.
"I was proud of how hard we played in the second half, but we gave up too many offensive rebounds and we didn't convert at the free throw line," said Toledo Head Coach
Tricia Cullop. "We gave up 16 offensive rebounds and barely shot 50 percent at the line. Those two categories absolutely killed us."
Kendall McCoy led the RedHawks (10-3, 1-1 MAC) with 17 points, followed closely by Savannah Kluesner with 16. The victors also received 12 points from Leah Purvis and 11 by Lauren Dickerson to register their second-straight win against the Rockets for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign.
Miami converted 41.0 percent (25-of-61) from the floor and 90.0 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line to help them run its record to a perfect 5-0 at home.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Rockets utilized points from six different players to take a 14-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Toledo was outscored 12-1 over the final 6:28 of the half and trailed 30-20 at intermission. Â
• The Rockets managed only six points in the stanza, shooting 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from the field and found themselves down 10 points at the break.
• Purvis and Kluesner triggered the strong quarter for the RedHawks with six points each to help the home team assume a double-digit lead.
THIRD QUARTER
• Toledo started the period with an 18-9 run to cut the deficit to a single point, 39-38, forcing Miami to burn a timeout. McIntyre sparked the strong start with a trio of layups, while Rokkanen and Black had five points each to prompt the RedHawks to stop the action.
• The timeout proved beneficial for Miami, as it outscored UT 9-5 for the remainder of the stanza to take a 48-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• UT began the fourth period the same way as the third, taking advantage of an impressive 10-1 burst to create a 53-49 lead. Treys from Rokkanen and Black fueled the run, while McIntyre and Boyd also tallied close-range baskets to give the visitors its largest lead.
• Unfortunately for the Rockets, Miami scored the ensuing six points to swing the momentum in their favor, 57-53, prompting Toledo to call a timeout.
• Toledo did not go quietly in the waning moments and eventually knotted the score at 61-61 thanks to a third three-point field goal from Rokkanen and a coast-to-coast layup by McIntyre with only 40 seconds left. Â
• On the RedHawks' ensuing possession, Kluesner knocked down two free throws with 17.8 seconds left to give the home team a lead they would not give up.
• Toledo quickly responded though, as Boyd was fouled with 7.7 left in regulation. Unfortunately for her and the Rockets, she split the free throws to make it a one-point game.
• UT quickly fouled McCoy with 4.6 seconds remaining, and she calmly made both charity tosses to set the stage for Toledo's last-second chance to force overtime.
