Toledo Adding Talented Quartet with Incoming Recruiting Class

11/19/2018 3:12:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio - University of Toledo Head Men's Basketball Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the signing of Mattia Acunzo (Sardinia, Italy), Aaron Etherington (Fishers, Ind.), Luke Maranka (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Donavan Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The quartet will begin attending the University of Toledo beginning in the 2019-20 academic year.

"We're thrilled to have four quality men like Mattia, Aaron, Luke and Donavan join our basketball family," Kowalczyk said. "I believe each one of them possesses the potential to be impact players. They are perfect fits for the winning culture we have established."

A 6-foot-8, 230-pound point forward, Acunzo averaged 11.1 points per game for three-time defending PIAA Class A champion Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage, Pa. Acunzo earned first-team all-league and second-team all-district honors playing alongside NCAA Division recruits Oscar Tshiebwe (West Virginia) and Maceo Austin (Duquesne).

"Mattia is very good with the ball in his hands, has great vision and can shoot," Kowalczyk said. "He's a very good decision-maker when taking on ball screens and in transition and has the size and potential to play point forward. He reminds us a lot of Tre'Shaun Fletcher. He could have a special career here."

A 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward, Etherington averaged 12.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a junior to earn all-conference and team Most Valuable Player honors for Hamilton Southeastern High School. Etherington grew up in a basketball family with his father Brett playing at Butler and his brothers, Alex and Austin, also playing collegiate basketball. PrepHoops.com has Etherington ranked as the No. 9 recruit in this year's senior class in the state of Indiana.

"We look at Aaron as someone who can help us replace Nate Navigato next year," Kowalczyk said. "He is really athletic, can play off the dribble and is a really good passer. He also has the fundamentals to be an elite shooter."

Maranka, a 6-foot-10, 205-pound forward who is ranked as the No. 11 recruit in the state of Michigan by PrepHoops.com, is the second homeschooled player from the state of Michigan to receive an NCAA Division I scholarship. He averaged 15.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots per game last year for the Grand Rapids Angels and received National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championship Midwest Post Player of the Year for a third straight year.

"Watching Luke play was similar to what we saw when we recruited Luke Knapke," Kowalczyk said. "He just needs time to get bigger and stronger. Luke is a very good athlete who has a 38-inch vertical and possesses a really good skill set and toughness."

A Hillsboro, Ill. native who moved to Michigan between his sophomore and junior years, Moore is a 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard who is ranked No. 4 in PrepHoops.com's Michigan recruit rankings. He tallied 18.0 points, 6.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game last year at West Bloomfield High School to earn first-team All-Oakland Activities Association honors.

"Donavan is a combo guard who has really good length and can develop into a tremendous defender," Kowalczyk said. "He's someone that gets to the rim and into the paint. He's also a very good offensive rebounder from the guard position and will bring some athleticism into our backcourt."
