NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – University of Toledo senior Natcha Daengpiem fired a career-best six-under par 66, including the first hole-in-one of her career, in Sunday's second round and is alone in first place at seven-under par 137 following 36 holes at the MAC Preview.
Daengpiem's play helped the Rockets shoot an impressive two-under 574 at the par-72, 5,991-yard Purgatory Golf Club and leaves them one shot in front of second-place Xavier. She will enter tomorrow's final round with a four-shot advantage and is looking to capture medalist honors for the first time in her UT career.
Daengpiem, whose 66 ranks second in program history, opened her remarkable round on the 10th hole and tallied birdies on No. 11, 12 and 13. After posting one bogey and nine pars over her next 10 holes, Daengpiem caught fire. She birdied No. 6, aced the par-three, 117-yard No. 7 hole and then birdied No. 8.
"I was just trying to enjoy everything out there for both rounds and stay focused on each shot," Daengpiem said. "I hit a nine-iron right at the flag on my hole in one. It landed five feet in front then went into hole. I was so excited."
"I'm extremely proud of how Natcha played in both of her rounds today," Head Coach Jenny Coluccio said. "She has been working very hard on her mindset and approach. I want Natcha to be a little more of a risk taker and it certainly paid off today.
Senior Pinyada Kuvanun also appears in the Top Five for UT and is tied for third place with an even-par 144 (74-70). Kuvanun had a chance for an even better score but bogeyed her final hole.
Junior Saranlak Tumfong is tied for eighth place at one-over par 145 (69-76) after carding a career-best three-under par 69 in the first round. Tumfong opened Round 1 with a birdie spree similar to Daengpiem's, collecting three in her first four holes. She then birdied her eighth hole before posting two bogeys and a birdie the rest of the way en route to her best round as a Rocket.
Senior Pimchanok Kawil is tied for 17th place at four-over par 148 (74-74), while junior Thunpijja Sukkasem is tied for 48th place at 14-over par 158 (76-82). Junior Donchanok Toburint is competing as an individual and is tied for 37th place at nine-over par 153 (75-78).
Toledo ranked second in the 12-team field with 31 birdies, trailing only Xavier's total of 33.
"The way the course was set up allowed us to be aggressive and I'm really glad we were able to take advantage of that," Coluccio said. "There were a few opportunities missed and a few things to tighten up before tomorrow, but we did a great job today of working on putting ourselves in the right positon to be successful. We're going to go out tomorrow with the best mindset possible and see what happens!"
Tomorrow's final round will begin with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
