TOLEDO, Ohio - University of Toledo senior guard Chris Darrington, who transferred into the Rocket men's basketball program from the University of Tennessee in April, will be eligible for competition this fall after the NCAA approved a waiver request for immediate eligibility.
"I'm very excited to be able to play right away for the University of Toledo," Darrington said. "I've been on pins and needles since I filed my waiver, and I feel really blessed to have the chance to play for this great program."
"I'm excited about the news that Chris will be immediately eligible this season," Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "Chris adds a great deal of value to our team as another perimeter player who can create his own shot and really pressure the basketball on the defensive end."
A 6-1, 180-pound Toledo native, Darrington saw action in 25 contests for the Southeastern Conference champion University of Tennessee last season. Prior to joining the Volunteers, Darrington earned first-team NJCAA Division I All-America honors and helped Vincennes University to a 32-3 record and a District XVI championship. He led the Trailblazers in points (20.7) and assists (5.1) while also boasting a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio and posting a 43.1 three-point FG% and 80.4 FT%. A four-year letterwinner at Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio, Darrington was named District Player of the Year and first-team All-Ohio as a senior in 2014-15 after averaging 23.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game that season.
Darrington and the Rockets open their 2018-19 campaign at Oakland on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Rochester, Mich. UT will then return to action the following evening with its home opener vs. Wilberforce (Ohio) University at 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
