Toledo, Ohio – The Toledo women's swimming and diving team will head to Akron, Ohio this weekend to compete in the Zippy Invitational. This three-day event will feature some of the best swim programs in the midwest region.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend and the three day invitational at Akron," said head coach Jonas Persson. "We have been training well and the team has gotten better and better at dual meets through the fall. We have put up some fast times while in heavy training so it will be exciting to see what we can do with a little rest."
Toledo will be one of nine teams competing in the event, including Akron, Buffalo, Bowling Green, St. Bonaventure, Bloomsburg, Clarion, Niagara and Oakland. The tournament will consist of men's and women's swimming and diving, and all events will take place in Ocasek Natatorium. The meet is slated to start at 9:00 a.m. each day.
"The meet will, most of all, tell us about the training we have done and what we still need to work on," said Persson. "We are halfway through the season so this is a perfect time to try and do some fast racing. There will be some fast teams there and I believe that it will be very competitive and fun."
The Rockets last competed in the Zippy Invitational a season ago, where they took fifth-place overall. They were highlighted by Izzy Jones setting an event record in the 500 yard freestyle in her freshman campaign with a time of 4:50.10.
UT will look to build off of its tri-meet sweep two weekends ago, when it beat Tiffin 208-44 and Findlay 165-127. The Rockets also set a new pool record on the day, when the 400 yard medley relay team of sophomore Maureen O'Sullivan, sophomore Bec Welke, sophomore Duda Sales and freshman Alida Ramden combined for a time of 3:47.71. Toledo also scored their first overall diving victories of the season, with freshman diver Megan Peepers taking first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
