TOLEDO, OH - The women's track and field program travels to the Mountain State of West Virginia for the two-day Thundering Herd Invitational at Marshall University on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 in Huntington, WV.
"The meet has been pretty good in the past couple of years," said Toledo head coach Linh Nguyen. "We decided to change it up a little bit and give our athletes something fresh, new and somewhere they have never been before."
The Rockets have not competed in the Thundering Herd Invitational in the meet's two-year existence. There will be 22 women's teams competing this season, including Bowling Green and Ohio from the Mid-American Conference.
"There will be better and deeper competition and a bigger atmosphere," said Nguyen. "Our short sprinter will be able to have a prelims and a finals, which helps in development and putting down faster times."
In its last competition, the Tom Wright Classic, Toledo was led by Madeline Pacella who recorded an indoor personal record of 1.76m to win the event.Â
"Madeline jumped from a shorter approach and took more jumps at an earlier height to get into a rhythm," continued Nguyen. "She's second in the MAC and that's the same height that got her into the NCAAs during the outdoor season."
Pacella is one of four Rockets to post a MAC Championship automatic qualifying mark. Joan Jepkirui qualified for the 3000m with a 9:43.31, Agata Forkasiewicz qualified for the 60m with a time of 7.43 and Madison Pierce has qualified in the long jump with a distance of 5.87 meters.
After this weekend, the Rockets will compete in Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational in South Bend, IN on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4.
