Toledo Heading to Rocky Mountains for Golfweek Conference Challenge

TOLEDO, OH — Toledo will compete in the eighth-annual Golfweek Conference Challenge for a third-straight season in Colorado next week. The tournament will take place Monday-Wednesday, September 26-28, and is comprised of the top teams from 18 conferences. The tournament will take place at the par-72, 6,262 Tom Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, CO.

     Toledo finished eight strokes shy of opening its 2016-17 campaign with a victory earlier this week and had to settle for second place at Ball State's Cardinal Classic. The Rockets registered the best team total in the final round with a five-over par 293 but that wasn't enough to overcome tournament champion Eastern Kentucky.

     Sophomores Pinyada Kuvanun (72-73-73=218) and Pimchanok Kawil (74-72-73=219) both registered Top-10 showings to lead UT by placing sixth and tied for seventh, respectively. Junior Napaphan Phongpaiboon also enjoyed a strong tournament by carding the best two rounds of her collegiate career to finish tied for 19th place at 10-over par 226 (82-73-71).

     Kawil, Kuvanun and Phongpaiboon will be joined in UT's lineup in Colorado by sophomores Natcha Daengpiem and Hannah Kochendoefer. They both tied for 27th place at the Cardinal Classic at 12-over par 228.

     The Rockets will be up against 13 programs that were ranked in the Top 100 of Golfstat's 2015-16 rankings. Leading the way at No. 22 is Tennessee, followed by No. 27 San Diego State, No. 34 TCU, No. 49 Pepperdine, No. 50 Campbell, No. 71 UC Davis, No. 73 New Mexico State, No. 77 Denver, No. 78 Old Dominion, No. 81 Washington State, No. 82 Iowa, No. 88 South Florida and No. 99 Idaho. Toledo was ranked No. 80 in last year's final rankings.
