TOLEDO, OH — University of Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the hiring of assistant coach DeAndre Haynes on Friday. A former Mid-American Conference Player of the Year at Kent State, Haynes comes to Toledo after spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the Golden Flashes.
Â
"I'm extremely excited to add DeAndre to our coaching staff," Kowalczyk said. "He represents all the qualities we want within our program and has a tremendous family. DeAndre was one of the top performers in the MAC when he played and knows what it takes to be successful. DeAndre will add a great deal of value to our program and is a tremendous coach who recognizes the type of talent and commitment you need to win. He truly understands the game."
Â
Haynes began his time as an assistant coach for KSU Head Coach Rob Senderoff prior to the 2012-13 campaign after playing professionally for six years in Belgium, Hungary, Germany and Europe. In his final season, he averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game for Namika Lappeenranta in Finland. During his time as an assistant coach, Haynes helped KSU to the 2014-15 MAC regular-season title as well as a pair of CollegeInsider.com Tournament appearances.
Â
"I'm honored and excited to be joining the Toledo basketball program and the Toledo community," Haynes said. "There is so much potential on the roster, and I can't wait to start helping develop our players on the floor. I'm looking forward to being part of something special with the Rocket family and helping continue to build this program, alongside Coach Kowalczyk and the rest of the staff."
Â
Haynes is KSU's all-time leader in assists (625) and steals (229) and became the first Golden Flash to earn the MAC's top player honor in 2006. An Honorable Mention All-American that year as well, Haynes led Kent State to the MAC regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The 6-foot-2 native of Detroit, MI was a four-year starter at point guard, totaling 89 wins and four postseason appearances during his time at KSU. Haynes currently ranks 12th in school history with 1,259 career points, while his 114 career starts are second all-time.
