TOLEDO, OH – Toledo's football players returned from spring break to begin Week 2  of spring football practice on Tuesday morning in the Fetterman Training Center. It was the fourth practice of the spring season and the first with live tackling.
Â
Head Coach Jason Candle said he was pleased with his team's progress overall.
Â
"We had fewer mistakes today as far as assignments, where to line up, things like that," said Candle, who will enter his first season as head coach next fall after seven years as a UT assistant. "But it's spring football. There's a lot of energy out there, and yet a lot mistakes and things that need to be corrected. As a coach you want them to be ready to go play a game right now. We're a long way from that right now. We have a lot of guys fighting for critical positions on our football team. It's been good to see the spirited competition. We're just trying to play the next play and keep getting better."
Â
Toledo is coming off a 10-2 season in 2015, including a 32-17 victory over Temple in the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl. The Rockets did lose some key players from last year's squad but plenty of talent remains, including 15 starters and six All-MAC players. In addition, eight of the Rockets' nine assistant coaches are new to the program, making spring practice even more vital.
Â
"We have a  lot of new coaches who are trying to foster relationships with players, making sure that the trust factor is there. In any relationship, communication, trust and respect are key," said Candle. "So we have new coaches in new roles, new players. Nineteen great seniors stepped away from our program last year so we have a lot of spots to be filled. We need every minute of every practice that we are allowed to have." Â
Â
The spring practice season culminates with the annual Spring Game at the Glass Bowl on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m. The season opens with a game at Arkansas State on Sept. 3. The home opener vs. Maine is on Sept. 10. For season ticket orders, call 419-530-GOLD (4653) for more information.
