KALAMAZOO, MI – Toledo dropped a 1-0 decision at Western Michigan on Sunday in Mid-American Conference action at the WMU Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 4-7-0 overall, 0-2-0 in the league.
The Broncos (5-2-2, 2-0-0 MAC) scored the lone goal in the 85th minute, as Irene Young headed the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Candice Uhl.
Both teams fired off 10 shots in the division showdown, with Toledo senior keeper Sam Tiongson tallying four saves for the Midnight Blue & Gold. Offensively, junior Kiersten Johnson led UT with two shots. The visitors pushed forward and had some quality chances throughout the match, but could not find the back of the frame.
"We like the pieces we have on offense," first-year head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We were just a little unlucky in our moments and we must keep finding chances to score goals. As a whole, our team is doing a good job of battling and working hard."
Buchholz's team will look to take those chances and turn them into goals next weekend at Scott Park.
"We're becoming tougher as a team," Buchholz said. "We're resilient, and I'm happy with the way the team is playing. We had a good offensive effort today, but we need find a way to finish. It's going to be great for the squad to play at home this weekend."
The Rockets return to the Glass City against Ball State on Friday, Oct. 2 at 4:00 p.m. and Miami on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
