SOUTHFIELD, MI - The Toledo women's tennis team fell to 2-3 on the season, losing to Detroit, 4-3, in a back-and-forth away match at the Franklin Athletic Club.
“Coach Mauntler and I have been extremely impressed by the way we have been playing doubles this season,” graduate assistant coach James Thorp said. “We did a great job coming out with energy and taking control early. We saw some progress on the singles court today and showed some good fight deep in the match, but we need to work on being mentally tough throughout the entire match as we move on to Cleveland State Sunday.”
The Rockets captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matchups.
Senior Lexy Pitt and junior Emily Mazzola led off doubles competition with a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot, while the duo of senior Pia Rygh and sophomore Lauren Thai clinched the point at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 win.
Both doubles teams are now 4-1 on the year, as Toledo holds a 10-4 overall record in doubles play this season.
In singles action, junior Katelyn Nguyen improved to 3-2 on the year with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, while Rygh won 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 at the top singles spot for her second win of the season.
In a crucial No. 6 singles matchup, Mazzola fought back after losing the first set to win the second frame and send the match into a deciding third set before falling 6-3 in the third.
The Rockets are back in action Sunday when they host Cleveland State at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
