TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo men's tennis team will open its 2014 fall schedule on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 19-21 when it travels to West Lafayette to compete in the Purdue Invitational.
The Rockets won two flights at last year's Purdue Invitational as senior Nicky Wong won the Flight C championship and sophomore Stjepan Sisko teamed up with junior Garrett Cona to claim the Flight B doubles title.
Wong will be looking for a three-peat, as he also won the Purdue Invitational's Flight C championship in 2012.
Six flights of singles competition will use the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recommended NCAA singles format and three flights of doubles will play an eight game pro-set with no-add scoring. The Septmber 8 ITA rankings, followed by the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), will be used for seeding the draws.
Each day will begin at 8:00 a.m., with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles on Friday, followed by one round of singles and two rounds of doubles on Saturday. Finals for all singles and doubles flights will take place on Sunday.
All matches will be played at either the Schwartz Tennis Center or the Cumberland Tennis Courts.
Toledo is one of 17 teams scheduled to have players competing in this year's tournament. The other teams include: Case Western, Chicago, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Iowa, IUPUI, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, UW Green Bay, Valparaiso, Vincennes and Western Michigan.
UT will be led by Sisko, the 2014 Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year and first-team All-MAC selection, who compiled a 15-8 (4-0 MAC) ledger in dual match play last season.
Second-team All-MAC selection Mark Singnil, Wong, Cona and junior Ryan Jorgensen also return and will look to strengthen the lineup after falling to MAC runner-up WMU in the conference tournament last year.
The Rockets are back in action on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 10-12, when they host the Rocket Invitational at the UT Tennis Courts.
