TOLEDO, OH — Former Kent State standout Jordan Mincy was hired as assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Toledo by head coach Tod Kowalczyk today.
“I'm really excited to add Jordan to our Rocket family,” Kowalczyk said. “He's an exceptionally well-rounded coach, a tremendous recruiter and has the ability to form great relationships with players. As a player, he was part of two Mid-American Conference championships and was as tough a point guard that this league has seen in many years. He understands what it takes to win a championship and possesses a great basketball mind.”
Mincy, 26, joins the Rockets after serving one season as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston under head coach Doug Wojcik and two years at his alma mater under head coaches Geno Ford and Rob Senderoff. One of the most instrumental floor leaders in Kent State history, he has quickly built a reputation as a well-connected and talented recruiter.
“I've known Coach Kowalczyk a long time and he's good friends with my former head coach and one of my mentors, Jim Christian,” Mincy said. “I'm very excited to be coming to Toledo, and I know that we have a lot of talent to work with and the program is striving to do great things. I'm really looking forward to working with the guards, especially Julius Brown and Josh Lemons at the point, since I'm very hands-on when working with players at my former position. I had a tremendous experience at the College of Charleston and learned a lot of new things, but I'm very happy to be returning to the MAC as well as the state of Ohio where I received my start in the coaching profession.”
Mincy helped the Cougars post a 24-11 win-loss ledger (14-4 in league play) this past season, advance to the Southern Conference championship game and appear in the College Basketball Invitational. Another highlight to Charleston's campaign was a 63-59 road triumph over No. 21 Baylor.
In his first season on KSU's staff in 2010-11, Mincy helped oversee the development of one of the most accomplished group of guards the Golden Flashes ever put on the court. Under Mincy's instruction, the Kent State backcourt produced MAC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Porrini, MAC Sixth-Man of the Year Carlton Guyton and MAC second-team honoree Rodriquez Sherman.
That initial season was one for the record books as the Golden Flashes compiled a 25-12 record while becoming the first MAC team in 21 years, and just the second in 48 years, to win back-to-back outright regular-season titles. Mincy assisted in leading a team that featured just one senior and 10 newcomers, helping the inexperienced group to the NIT quarterfinals by upsetting both Saint Mary's and Fairfield on the road.
The 2011-12 campaign saw KSU post a 21-12 ledger and 12-4 league mark as the Golden Flashes won 20 games and advanced to the postseason (Collegeinsider.com Invitational) for the 13th time in the last 14 years. The Golden Flashes opened the season with a historic win for the program by defeating West Virginia, the first true road win over a BCS school in the regular season since Dec. 15, 1970 at Purdue.
A four-year letterwinner from 2005-09, Mincy returned to the Kent State program after spending the 2009-10 season as a graduate assistant under former head coach Darrin Horn at South Carolina.
Upon his graduation in 2009, Mincy's 135 games played were more than anyone in MAC history. A true floor general in every sense of the word, he led the team to 93 wins and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Mincy ranks seventh all-time on the school's career assists list (347) and was tabbed MAC Defensive Player of the Year by the MAC Report Online as a senior.
A renowned defender throughout his time with the Golden Flashes, Mincy averaged 9.9 ppg over the final 15 games of his career. The stretch helped lead Kent State to an eight-game win streak and included a career-high 27-point outing versus Ohio, shooting 5-for-5 from beyond the arc to tie the school record for three-point field-goal percentage in a single game.
A Memphis, TN native, Mincy is one of three siblings in his family to play college basketball. He led Ridgeway High School to the Tennessee Class AAA state championship in 2005. Mincy earned his bachelor's degree in business marketing in 2009 and is working towards his master's degree in business. A member of Kent State's Gamma Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., he is engaged to LaTisha Carr and the couple will marry on August 17, 2013.
