Rockets Drop 4-3 Decision to Duquesne on Friday

HARMAR, PA – The Toledo women's tennis team fell to Duquesne 4-3 inside Alpha Tennis and Fitness on Friday. The loss is the second straight for the Midnight Blue & Gold, and the third in one-point decisions. UT drops to 4-6 on the season and will have an extended break before its next match on March 5.
“This was a disappointing match for us,” UT head coach Tracy Mauntler said. “I didn't feel like we played to our potential from top to bottom of the lineup. We've got over a full week of practice before we play our next match. We will make some adjustments and keep working.”
Each team claimed a doubles win, before Duquesne took the all-important point by winning the first flight in a tiebreaker. Senior Silvia Carvajal and freshman Katelyn Nguyen fell at No. 1 singles 8-7 (8-6). The sophomore duo of Lexy Pitt and Pia Rygh won the second flight 8-3.
Both teams also recorded three wins in singles competition, making the doubles point the deciding factor in the match.
The Dukes won the top two flights in straight sets over junior Chrissy Coffman and Rygh. Nguyen bounced back with a straight-set (6-1, 6-1) victory at No. 3 singles, while freshman Emily Mazzola won at No. 5 and Carvajal at No. 6.
The only singles match to go an extra set transpired at the No. 5 position. Freshman Mackenzie Bowman fell in a hard-fought match 6-1, 3-6 and 4-6.
The Rockets have 10 days off before their Spring Break Trip to Orlando, FL March 5-8. UT will play Nova Southeastern, James Madison and South Dakota.
