GLENDALE, WI - Silvia Carvajal won at No. 6 singles in three sets to clinch a 4-3 UT victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday. Toledo improves to 4-4 on the season and will carry its two-match win streak into Saturday's match at Illinois-Chicago.
"This was a great comeback for us," UT head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "It's really tough to win a match without the doubles point, but we proved we could do it which will be important down the road. I'm proud of the battle we put up in singles today."
Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed two of the three doubles matches to earn the one-point advantage at the beginning of the match. Sophomores Pia Rygh and Lexy Pitt won the only doubles match for UT at the No. 3 position, 8-0.
Rygh notched the first UT point at No. 2 singles over Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Fritz, 6-3 and 6-4. Freshman Katelyn Nguyen followed that up with a straight-set victory at No. 3 and freshman Emily Mazzola took the No. 5 match, also in straight sets.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee captured the top singles match over junior Chrissy Coffman and the fourth match over Pitt. That set up the final singles match with Carvajal and Milwaukee's Kurer. After splitting the first two sets, Carvajal outlasted Kurer in the final tie-breaker, 7-6(5) to seal the overall victory.
