Toledo, OH - The Toledo swimming and diving team defeated Eastern Michigan 188.5-107.5 in its final regular-season dual-match before the Mid-American Conference championships.
Of the team's 12 first-place finishes, the Rockets (5-2, 4-0 MAC) had four swimmers win multiple events against EMU. Senior Laura Lindsay had her typical day at the natatorium, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:02.34) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.79). She has yet to be beaten in either of those events this season. Junior Carly Harter won the 200 freestyle (1:50.76) and 100 freestyle (51.92). Sophomore Christina Noens outraced her competitors in the 100 backstroke (56.96) and 200 backstroke (2:01.03). Sophomore Beth Rogers, in addition to an excellent performance on the mic for the pre-meet National Anthem, turned in first-place finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:03.47) and 100 butterfly (55.84).
Junior LesLee Winfield swam to victory in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.17.
In diving, junior Nikki Schropp took some spotlight of her own, as she made her zone cut for the first time this year, qualifying for the NCAA zone meet in the three-meter dive. She took first-place in the event, scoring 286.72 points. The qualifying mark is 280 points.
"This is a huge accomplishment for both Nikki and the diving program," said graduate assistant diving coach Al Morrison. "We've been working really hard and it shows that we've been moving in the right direction. It's been a few years since Toledo diving has been represented at nationals, so we're excited to have Nikki go down and compete against the top divers in the country."
Toledo's 200 medley relay team of freshman Maria Bargardi, Lindsay, Rogers and Harter also placed first, winning in a time of 1:45.10.
"It was a good win for our seniors today," said head coach Liz Hinkleman. "I am proud of how our team raced."
The Rockets' next competition will be the big enchilada, the MAC Championships, in Akron, OH from Feb. 23-25. They will look to win their second conference title in three years.
