Rockets Fall to Rival Falcons in Close 4-3 Decision

PERRYSBURG, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team came up just short for the second-straight match as they dropped a 4-3 decision to rival Bowling Green on Saturday. The Rockets (12-9; 3-4 MAC) and Falcons played to an even split in singles competition, but BG claimed the doubles point earlier in the match to take the win in the rivalry contest.
Doubles play was again a hard-fought point. After BG won the No. 3 doubles matchup 8-3 over Amanda Border and Silvia Carvajal, the Rockets evened the score with an 8-4 win by Ashley Frey and Alexandra Cristello at No. 2. The duo of Polina Guimaraes and Kelsey Anonsen played tough in the top draw, but fell 8-6 as BG won the doubles point.
The Rockets and Falcons went match-for-match in singles play to send the decision down to the final points. The teams split the first four matchups, with the Rockets picking up victories from Border at No. 6 (7-5, 6-4) and their all-time win leader, Frey, at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6[6]). The Falcons claimed the Nos. 1 and 3 matches over Guimaraes and Christine Coffman, respectively, to take a 3-2 lead with two matches still playing.
Needing wins in both of the remaining matches, the Rockets' comeback bid was cut short as BG's Hill defeated Anonsen in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Falcons. Cristello won the remaining match 6-4, 7-6(5) at No. 5, but BG already had the decisive four points.
The Rockets will close out the regular season next weekend as they travel to Ypsilanti, MI to clash with Eastern Michigan on April 22. Following the game, the Rockets will return to Ypsilanti for the MAC Tournament beginning on April 28.
