BOWLING GREEN, OH - The University of Toledo swimming team took victories in 13 of 14 events, and the Rockets improved their record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the MAC with a convincing 158-99 victory over rival Bowling Green in Cooper Pool.
Dating back to 1999, the Rockets, currently ranked No. 39 in the country, have claimed 11 straight victories in the series with the Falcons.
"This was a very good meet for us overall," Lars Jorgensen, head coach, said. "This is a friendly rivalry we have with Bowling Green, which is a very well-coached team. But they're our rivals and you always want to beat them."
Sophomore Laura Lindsay (Uniontown, OH) continued her near-perfect season as she won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. For the second-straight meet, Lindsay set an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 100, going for a season-best effort 1:02.46 tonight. She has 15 victories in 17 tries in the breaststroke events.
"Laura again proved why she is a leader on this team," Jorgensen said. "That was a great swim by her in the 100 and puts her in a better position to qualify for the NCAA Championships."
Junior co-captain Amanda Thompson (Monroe, MI) had a busy and productive evening, as she won the 100 butterfly in a season-best mark of 56.18, swam on the first-place 200 free relay team (1:36.09), the first-place 400 medley relay team (3:49.88) and took second in the 100 back (59.39).
Thompson was joined on the 200 free relay team by freshman Carly Harter (North Huntington, PA), sophomore Jacque Fate (Fremont, OH) and senior co-captain Katie White (Leland, MI). The 400 medley team was comprised of Thompson, senior Ashley Cusack (Willow Springs, IL), Lindsay and White.
Junior Laura Heckroth (Columbus, IN) continued to swim well as she won the 1000 freestyle (10:09.97) and the 200 IM (2:10.40). Junior Kelsey Atchison (Silver Lake, OH) won the 200 free in 1:53.14 and finished second in the 200 backstroke.
Cusack earned wins in both the 100 back (58.82) and 200 back (2:07.92). Freshman Kenzie Bagan (Roanoke, IN) was victorious in the 200 fly (2:04.41), Harter won the 100 free in a season-best time of 51.67 and junior co-captain Jacy Dyer (Lebanon, PA) led four Rockets to the finish line in the 500 free (5:01.74). The Rockets also took the top-four spots in the 1000 free.
"This meet was a really good display of the depth we've built this season," Jorgensen said. "But we're still not firing on all cylinders yet. There's a lot of work to complete before we're in good shape for the MAC Championships and some areas that we need to sharpen up."
The Rockets return home for their final home meet of the season at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29 against Akron at the Student Rec Center Pool.
