NEW YORK, NY ? This past weekend, almost 500 runners competed at the Iona College's Meet of Champions and 22 of them donned Toledo's Midnight Blue and Gold.
The women's cross country team finished eighth out of 21 teams while the men placed 18th of 26 teams. Dagna Sztykiel was Toledo's top finisher on the women's side with a time of 23:15.40, while Chris Wall was the first UT male to cross the finish line (26:34.60). This marks the second consecutive meet that Sztykiel and Wall were the top finishers for the Rockets.
Rounding out the top five runners for the UT women were Sarah Neubacher (23:37.40), Emma Kertesz (23:50.80), Audra Brown (23:56.40) and Natalie Perzanowski (23:57.40).
“I felt like our problem was that we didn't get out well and it was hard for our girls to move up with the layout of the course,” said Head Coach Kevin Hadsell. “However, I think that we did a nice job despite not having three of our top five runners.”
For the men, Ken Kiptoo Samoei (26:39.30), Elisha Kipchumba (27:01.60), Jonathon DeWitt (27:10.50) and Barnaba Kiprotich (27:18.40) finished two through five, respectively.
“On the men's side, I felt like we did a nice job for our first race of the year and I'm looking forward to the next few meets as we start to get our legs underneath us,” Hadsell said.
The top women's finisher was Leah Rosenfeld from Penn State (21:54.70) with the Lions capturing the women's team title. Cornell and Boston College finished second and third, respectively. Cameron Levin (24:24.10) from Southern Utah was the top male runner and Michigan captured the men's team title. Penn State and Iona rounded out the top three.
UT will be in action next weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, MN on Saturday Sept. 27.
