TOLEDO, OH - Former Toledo women's basketball player Savannah Werner has signed a contract with Club Irlandesas in Spain for the upcoming season. Werner plans to make her way to Bilbao, Spain on Friday.
Club Irlandesas is a member of the Spanish Second Division Professional Basketball League and will provide the Angola, IN native an opportunity to continue her playing career.
"I'm very excited and blessed to have this opportunity," said Werner, who scored in double figures on 37 occasions in her three-year career wearing the Midnight Blue and Gold. "Playing professionally overseas is something that I really wanted to do after I graduated. This is going to be a great learning experience for me."
As a senior, Werner tallied 12.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game. She ranked 11th in the MAC in field-goal percentage (46.1%), 15th in free-throw percentage (70.2%) and 20th in scoring. The Angola, IN native turned up her level of performance the final 15 contests, averaging 14.0 points, 5.5 caroms and 1.1 steals, while shooting 47.3 percent (71-of-150) from the field and 72.0 percent (54-of-75) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Mark Ehlen, who has had five other players (Kahli Carter, Tia Davis, Mimi Olson, Julie Hillis, Karin Hoogendam) sign professional contracts over his 12 years at UT, also sees this as a tremendous opportunity for Werner.
"Savannah worked extremely hard to get better to give herself this opportunity," Ehlen said. "It's a great thing anytime a player can continue their basketball career. It's also a real positive for the program, but it's more of a reflection of her and the opportunity she has."
