Toledo, OH - Toledo men's tennis won on Senior Day against Buffalo, 5-2. Today's match concludes the regular season for the Rockets. Next weekend they will travel to the Mid-American Conference Championships.
In doubles, seniors Travis Curran and Brian Rager played their final home doubles match together at No. 1. The two toped their opponent in a harsh match, 9-8 (7-5). Changing in up a little in the next two matches, Keith Moran was moved up to play with Jared Miller at No. 2 and Jay Miller came into play at No. 3 with Chris Clark. Miller and Moran lost 8-3, but Miller and Clark won 8-5 to capture the doubles point for the Rockets.
"We struggled at doubles today," said head coach Al Wermer, "but we were able to get by and secure the point."
Jared Miller moved from his normal spot at No.2 to No. 1 where he won 7-5, 5-7 (10-7). "Jared broke through with a tough win over an opponent that would never quit," recalled Wermer.
In a rough match at No. 2 Clark fell short 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-1 as did Curran at No. 6. Curran lost 6-4, 6-7 (4) (13-11). While at No. 4 Keith Moran also fought his way through a gruesome match, he won 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, senior Josh Moran won his final home match 6-2, 6-3. Tyler Sonkin won at No. 5 6-0, 6-2. "Josh and Tyler cut through their opponent like a hot knife through butter," said Wermer. "Both of them really stuck it to their opponents."
"It was a long, hot and sticky day," said Wermer, "with a sloppy, scrappy victory."
The 2007 Men's MAC Championship will be held at IPFW in Ft. Wayne, IN.
