TOLEDO, OH - On Senior Night, it was a senior Danielle Bishop, who stepped up and led Toledo to a 74-66 victory over Western Michigan in Savage Hall on Wednesday. Bishop led a balanced Rocket attack with 16 points, including 12 points in the second half.
"This is a real satisfying win for our program," Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen said. "We beat a solid team. We were floundering much of the latter part of the year and we wanted our last two games to be the start of a new season. Western Michigan is a team who had just won four out of five. To beat them twice this year is a good feeling, especially going into the conference tournament on a two-game winning streak."
Junior TaYani Clark and classmate Tamesha Scotton added 11 points a piece in the regular-season finale. Toledo's other senior, Savannah Werner, had nine points.
The victory moves Toledo (10-18, 6-10 MAC) into a tie with Western Michigan (13-17, 6-10 MAC) for fourth place in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference. With its two victories over the Broncos, UT secured the No. 4 seed in the West, and will play Buffalo, the No. 5 seed from the East, in the third game of the MAC Tournament on Sunday at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Tip-off is 30 minutes after Game No. 2, approximately 5:45 p.m.
Toledo trailed at the half, 33-32, and fell behind by as many as four points early in the second half. But a layup by Bishop with 14:27 left gave Toledo a 45-44 lead it never relinquished. WMU was down by only one, 61-60, with 4:23 left, but Bishop capped a 9-0 run with a three-pointer to give UT a 70-60 lead with 1:38 to play.
Western Michigan was led by Carrie Moore with 29 points. The nation's leading scorer entering the game with a 25.2 average, Moore shot just 5-of-13 in the second half, including 0-of-4 from three-point range.
