Eastern Michigan drained 11 three-point field goals and cruised to a 76-42 victory over Toledo on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (13-11, 8-5 MAC) had five players hit a triple and shot 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from beyond the arc. EMU's effort was also aided by UT's 28 turnovers, which the home team translated into 29 points.
UT (8-17, 4-9 MAC) entered today's contest second in the MAC in three-point field-goal percentage defense, allowing its opponents to shoot only 31.5 percent. EMU's 11 triples were the second-most surrendered by the Rockets this season. The high is 14 at Santa Clara on Dec. 28.
Kendra Gallert, who finished 4-of-7 from three-point land, led three Eastern Michigan players in double figures with 14 points and six assists. Sarah VanMetre had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Patrice McKinney added 11 points, eight steals and two blocks.
Sophomore Diana Reindl paced two Rockets in double-digits with 12 points and nine caroms, while freshman Allie Clifton chipped in 11 points and six boards. UT was limited to 34.7 percent (17-of-49) shooting from the field, 16.7 percent (1-of-6) from three-point land and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from the charity stripe.
EMU's Gallert started the contest out red-hot and hit a pair of treys in the first three minutes to help the home team establish an early 13-6 edge.
The Eagles continued to dial long distance and a triple by Alyssa Pittman pushed their advantage to 21-10 at 11:43. Four of EMU's first eight field goals came from beyond the arc.
The home team then concluded the first half with two more treys from Canea Williams and claimed a 40-19 lead at the intermission. The Eagles totaled seven three-pointers in the first 20 minutes and shot 50.0 percent (15-of-30) from the field.
The Rockets, on the other hand, shot a respectable 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from the floor but were hindered by 16 miscues. UT's Reindl was the only player who could get anything going offensively in the first half and tallied 10 points.
The Eagles did not miss a beat to start the second half and hit four more triples in the first six-plus minutes to extend their lead to 57-29.
UT could not get anything going offensively or defensively and did not get closer than 22 points the rest of the contest.
The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21 when they travel to Northern Illinois. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. (CT) in the Convocation Center.
