ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis' Julia Bradenberg netted the match winner as the No. 27-ranked Billikens shut out Toledo, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match this afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. SLU's (3-1-2) Dee Guempel connected on a penalty kick in the final seconds to account for the two-score margin.
Saint Louis dominated play in the opening half and had chances early as Maureen Hughes shot wide of the right post from eight yards in the fifth minute. Guempel was wide of the left post from 12 yards in the 13th minute. Bradenberg broke the ice in the 15th minute with a 16-yard bullet that caromed off a Rockets defender's head and zoomed under the cross bar. SLU All-American candidate Courtney Hulcer assisted on the play. The Bills out-shot Toledo 9-2 in the first half.
Rather than sit on the lead, Saint Louis continued to attack throughout the second half. Bradenberg had an insurance goal in the 62nd minute wiped off the board by a late offsides call. Rockets senior keeper Jen Whipple came up with a diving save in the 69th minute of Heather Crawford's shot in a goalmouth scramble. Whipple again came up big on Guempel's 15-yard strike off a short corner in the 75th minute.
Guempel drew a foul on a counter attack in the last second of play and drilled the resulting penalty kick inside the right post. Saint Louis out-shot Toledo, 20-4, and had an 8-3 advantage on corners. Whipple made eight stops, while Saint Louis' Hannah Koesterer collected two saves to post her second career shutout.
The Rockets (1-4-1) continue their season-long seven-game road swing when they travel to Terre Haute, IN to battle Indiana State on Friday, Sept. 15 at 4:00 p.m. (CT)
