Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team ran its record to 3-2 overall with a 6-1 win over Bradley on Sunday morning at Laurel Hill Tennis Club. The Rockets swept the doubles matches and dominated the top singles flights, while scratching out wins in the lower flights to pick up the victory.
A week after being shutout by Michigan State on the road, the Rockets returned home to Laurel Hill where they are now 2-1 on the year and turned the tables on Bradley. The first doubles team of Myriam Cueva and Eunice Paravicini and the third doubles team of Sarah VanderMolen and Sarah Horning each won easily 8-1, while the second doubles team of Viviana Rivero and Jenny Belksy had little trouble in an 8-3 victory.
Cueva got back on the winning track at first singles, after missing two matches due to injury and losing last weekend, the junior defeated Elise Montrose 6-2, 6-3. Paravicini came back after losing her first match of the year last weekend and won easily over Ashley Morris at second singles 6-3, 6-1.
Horning and Belsky were each able to grind out tough matches in the lower singles flights to push the Rockets to victory. Belsky won the first set of her fourth singles match handily, 6-0, before Kim Braun came back fighting in the second set to make it close before Belsky prevailed 7-5 to take the match.
Horning won the first set of her fifth singles contest 6-3 before losing the second in a tie-breaker 6-7 (9-7). A super tie-breaker was played to determine the third set with the outcome of the overall match already decided, with Horning winning 10-4.
"We were able to dominate the doubles competition which helped lead us to victory," Head Coach Tracy Honko said. "The fact that Belsky and Horning both had close matches will help them later in the season."
The Rockets hit the road next weekend with two matches in Pittsburgh, PA. On Friday, Feb. 17, UT will take on Duquesne at 4:30 P.M. before battling Robert Morris on Saturday (Feb. 18).
