ATHENS, OH - Toledo claimed an 81-49 victory at Ohio on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The victory snapped the Rockets' three-game losing steak and improved them to 9-12 overall, 4-7 in the league.
UT shot a season-best 60.0 percent (30-of-50) from the floor, including an amazing 76.9 percent (20-of-26) in the second half. The Midnight Blue and Gold scored 51 points in the second half alone. They also did a good job of taking care of the basketball, dishing out 19 assists, against only 14 turnovers.
Junior Danielle Bishop led three players in double figures with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. Senior Crystal Young added 12 points, seven assists and five steals, while classmate Monique Lloyd tied her career-high with 10 points off the bench in only six minutes. All 11 UT players saw action and got their names in the scoring column.
UT led wire-to-wire and scored the game's first 10 points, including five from Young, to force Ohio into an early timeout. The Rockets continued to shot the ball effectively from the field and sophomore Kristi Zeller's second triple upped their margin to 21-7 with 11:32 showing on the clock. UT knocked on seven of its first 12 shots, including three of four beyond the arc, while Ohio was limited to two of nine. UT then cooled off considerably from the field in the remaining stages of the half, hitting only 3-of-12 shots, but still held a 30-16 edge at the intermission.
UT built its first-half lead with a 22-2 edge in points off turnovers and at the same time limited Ohio to just 22.7 percent shooting. The Bobcats were held without a field goal the last five minutes of the half.
Ohio started the second half with a mini 5-0 run to pull within single digits, but Toledo quickly responded with a 21-8 run, including three tough baskets on the baseline by Bishop to make the score 42-25 with 15:31 left.
The Rockets then put the game away just minutes later with eight-consecutive points by Lloyd to establish a 20-point cushion. The closest the Bobcats would get the rest of the way was 17 points.
Ohio finished the game shooting 25.9 percent (14-of-54). The Bobcats tallied more free throws (17-of-21) than field goals. Rachel Frederick was the only Ohio player in double figures and had 18 points, eight caroms and four steals. Ohio was guilty of 23 turnovers and the Rockets had a season-best 16 steals, which they converted into a commanding 32-9 edge in points off turnovers.
The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they travel to Muncie, IN to battle Ball State. Tipoff from Worthen Arena is slated for 7:00 p.m.
