KALAMAZOO, MI - Western Michigan (7-14, 4-6 MAC) snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 60-58 victory over Toledo (9-11, 5-4 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action at University Arena.
Carrie Moore and Kelly Koerber led the victorious Broncos with a game-high 21 points apiece and both played all 40 minutes. Koerber added a game-high 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
WMU shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the floor and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the charity stripe. The Broncos also won the battle on the boards, 39-34.
Sophomore Allison Lindborg paced the Rockets' attack with a career-best 13 points. Sophomore Danielle Bishop also tallied double figures with 11. UT also received a good effort off the bench from junior Monique Lloyd, who finished with six points, four caroms and a blocked shot.
UT shot 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the field, but for the second-consecutive game was hampered at the free throw line, hitting only 57.1 percent (12-of-21).
WMU jumped out of the shoot quickly and received a quick six points from Koerber to take an early 10-6 lead. The Rockets then went into a scoring drought over the next four-plus minutes as the Broncos increased their advantage to 19-12.
Western Michigan continued to push its lead behind solid inside play from Koerber and Moore to take a 30-24 lead at the intermission. The Broncos' top two scoring threats combined for 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals in the first half.
To open the second half, WMU received a three-point play from Koerber to make it 37-30 contest with 17:31 remaining in regulation. Toledo then clawed its way back behind a pair of three-pointers by junior Crystal Young and freshman Olivia Terry to cut the deficit to one point, 39-38, with 15:28 left.
Over the next few minutes the score would remain close but in WMU's favor until an offensive putback by UT's Lloyd gave the visitors its first lead of the contest, 50-49, with 8:00 left.
Moore and WMU quickly retaliated with a pair of baskets to retake the lead, 53-50. Back came the Rockets, though, as a runner by Lindborg pushed the lead back to UT, 54-53, with 3:37 left.
UT increased its lead to 56-53 on a basket by Bishop, but three-consecutive free throws by WMU knotted the teams at 56-56 with 2:03 left.
After the teams exchange baskets, UT senior Karin Hoogendam went to the charity stripe for a pair but came up short on both attempts. On WMU's ensuing possession, Moore drew a foul with the shot clock running down and hit both free throws to put the home team ahead 60-58 lead with 11.8 seconds left.
Toledo advanced the ball to midcourt and called a timeout to set up one final play. Bishop accepted an inbounds pass from Young and went to the basket trying to tie the game and or draw a foul. She was bumped in the lane and threw up a shot that hit the side of the backboard as time expired. Much to the dismay of the Toledo coaching staff, a foul was not called on the play and the game was over.
Toledo returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 8 when it hosts Central Michigan. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Savage Hall.
