Toledo, OH - On Senior Night at the UT Recreation Center, the Rocket seniors finished their home careers in dramatic fashion.
In a meet televised locally on BCSN, the UT women's swim team edged out Eastern Michigan, 155-145, in a dual-meet on Friday, Feb. 4. The meet was not settled until the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, which the Rockets won in a pool-record time of 1:35.35.
Fittingly, it was a senior, Emily Markovich, who swam the anchor in that final event.
Markovich also won the 50 and 100 freestyl relays. Fellow senior Iiris Hilvo won the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Another senior, Jennifer Patterson, won the 100 backstroke. The three also participated in UT's winning 200 medley relay team.
"Our seniors stepped up and swam fantastic," said head coach Lars Jorgensen. " They were the difference in this meet. They've been great senior leaders all season long, and they really led us to victory tonight."
Toledo's other first-place finishers were sophomore Lindsay Tubbs (200 butterfly) and sophomore Mackenzie Manard (100 butterfly).
The victory against a top MAC school should give Toledo confidence heading into the MAC Championships at Ohio University (Feb. 24-26). "Eastern is a great program, and we feel we can be competitive with them and the other top schools at the MACs," said Jorgensen.
