Cincinnati, OH - The University of Toledo women's basketball team played 8-1 Cincinnati to a 31-31 tie at intermission before the Bearcats' inside prowess took over in a 70-60 win over the Rockets Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Arena. The loss drops the Rockets to 5-3. Junior Danielle Bishop hit three three-pointers in the first half and finished with 19 points to lead the Rockets, while freshman Diana Reindl, in her second start, had 16 points.
"Cincinnati shot 70 percent in the second half and our offensive execution was not what it needed to be," Head Coach Mark Ehlen said. "We gave up too many transition layups and had too many turnovers. Giving up layups and easy shots hurts you every time."
The Bearcats opened up a 12 point lead twice in the second half after a tight first half, before the Rockets were able to come back. After UC's Jill Stephens had a layup to put UC up 58-47 with 9:36 remaining, UT stormed back going on a 9-0 run led by Reindl.
The freshman hit three consecutive field goals, before the Bearcats had a decisive 6-0 run of their own. Toledo would get no closer than six points the remainder of the game, as Crystal Young's layup with 2:02 to go proved to be the final bucket for the Rockets.
The entire first half was tight, as UC's lead of six points (23-17) with 9:25 to go in the the half was the largest for either team. Bishop was the only player on either squad in double figures with 13, before foul trouble early in the second half forced her to sit down for an extended period of time.
The Rockets shot 43 percent for the game, compared to 51 percent for the Bearcats, and were outrebounded 38-24.
"While we're never happy to lose, I'm proud of the way we came in here and competed and Cincinnati is a good team," Ehlen said. "Diana (Reindl) gave us a big lift, which is a great sign for her and the team."
The Rockets return to action after Christmas as they travel to New Orleans, LA to compete in the Tulane DoubleTree Classic, Wednesday and Thursday (Dec. 28-29).
