TOLEDO, OH - Senior Shawn Hurst drilled a two-out single in the 10th inning to lift Toledo (13-28, 4-10 MAC) to a 5-4 victory over Miami (26-14, 8-4 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action at overcast Scott Park.
With a runner on first base and one out in the extra frame, classmate Sean Dobson was intentionally walked by Miami reliever Chad Reineke. A wild pitch by Reineke ensued to move both runners into scoring position, before Hurst laced the game-winning hit in UT's sixth extra-inning contest of the season. As a result of today's victory, the Rockets improve to 3-3 in extra-inning affairs.
Rocket starter Kurt Woeste (2-6) earned the victory, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts in his team-leading third complete game of the season.
Senior Aaron Rouser led the Rockets' nine-hit attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Hurst notched two hits.
For the second-consecutive game, Miami got out of the gates quickly scoring an unearned run in the first frame. Brandon Hillier led off the contest with a single up the middle. Woeste attempted to keep Hillier close at first, but an errant throw allowed him to advance to third on the play. Hillier then scored the game's first run on a RBI groundout by John Slone.
Toledo tied the score in the bottom of the first frame, tallying a run on a wild pitch by Miami starter Jeff Day. With one out, Rouser hit the first of his two doubles. A groundout by Dobson moved Rouser to third, before Day tried to come inside on Hurst with a fastball, but the ball eluded the Miami catcher, allowing Rouser to knot the score at 1-1.
After Miami scored a run in the fourth, the Rockes registered a pair of runs in the fifth to take its first lead of the series, 3-2. Freshman Dustin Sommer led things off with a double. Ruth then reached base on an infield error to put runners on first and second. A walk to senior Jarrod Resendez loaded the bases, before Dobson hit a ground ball to Miami's Courtney Campbell as shortstop that looked to be an inning-ending double play. Fortunately for the Rockets, Miami second baseman Geoff Orr's throw to first was low allowing both Sommer and Ruth to score.
Miami tied the score in the sixth on a solo home run by Sam Sellery and recaptured the lead in the seventh on an infield single by Orr.
Refusing to quit, Toledo tied the contest in the eighth on a RBI single by Dobson. Rosuer began the eighth with his team-leading fourth triple of the campaign to chase Day. Dobson greeted Reineke with a sharp single to right to send the game in extra innings.
The two teams finish off the three-game series tomorrow afternoon, May 2, with a 1:00 p.m. start.
