ROCHESTER, MI - Toledo (12-27) pounded out a season-high 19 hits Wednesday afternoon, including 14 for extra bases, in its 17-3 non-conference victory at Oakland (11-25). Among the extra-base hits were a season-high six home runs from four Rocket players.
Senior CF Sean Dobson (5-for-6, 5 RBI, 5 runs scored) fueled the Rockets' attack hitting for the cycle, including belting a pair of home runs. It is the second five-hit effort for the Eastpointe, MI native in the last three games.
Fellow senior Shawn Hurst (3-for-5, 4 RBI, 3 runs scored) was not to be outdone, though, blasting a pair of home runs himself en route to driving in four runs.
In the last three games, Dobson and Hurst combined for eight home runs, 18 RBI, 17 hits and 16 runs scored.
Also collecting round-trippers for the Midnight Blue and Gold were seniors Jarrod Resendez (1-for-4, 2 runs scored, RBI) and Doug Yoder (1-for-1, 2 RBI, run scored).
Several Rockets enjoyed fine offensive afternoons. Senior Aaron Rouser finished the day 3-for-6 with three runs scored, while junior Matt Ruth was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
Toledo, which recorded its third-straight 10-plus run contest, received a quality start from freshman starter Greg Gompf. Gompf threw 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts to earn his team leading third win of the season.
Resendez led things off in the first with a home run to left field on the second pitch of the game from Oakland starter Tony Marulli (0-1) to get the Rockets going. Three batters later Hurst followed suit with a two-run blast for a 3-0 Toledo lead.
The Rockets doubled their lead in the fourth, tallying three more runs on four hits. Dobson plated the first run on a double down the left field line, followed by a two-run double by sophomore Dan Stong to give the Rockets a 6-0 lead.
Oakland cut the lead to 6-2 in the fifth, before a solo home run by Dobson and a sacrifice fly by redshirt freshman Ryan Laude put UT's lead back to six at 8-2.
Back-to-back home runs from Dobson and Hurst in the eighth put the game out of reach. The Rockets then finished off the scoring in the ninth with a two-run home run by Yoder and RBI's by junior Dan Ruth and Hurst to make the final 17-3.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, April 30 when the Rockets begin a three-game series against Mid-American Conference East Division leader Miami. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
