TOLEDO, OH - Wright State's (14-25) Matt Barhost drilled a three-run double in the top of the 10th inning Tuesday afternoon to propel the Raiders to a 15-11 non-conference victory over Toledo (11-27) at chilly Scott Park.
WSU's Chris Juergen led off the extra frame with a walk. The Raiders' Pat Masters attempted a sacrifice bunt to move Juergen's to second, but an errant throw to first base by UT junior reliever Ben Lovell put runners on second and third with no outs. The Rockets intentionally walked the next batter to put a force at each corner, but Barhorst laced a double down the right field line to clear the bases. WSU then added an insurance run on a RBI double by Adam Morton to hand the Rockets their third loss in five extra-inning contests this season.
The Rockets trailed in the contest 11-8 after seven innings before rallying to force the extra inning. In the bottom of the eighth, a sacrifice fly by senior PH Doug Yoder, followed by a RBI by senior CF Sean Dobson cut the lead to one. The Midnight Blue and Gold then received a RBI double by freshman C Dustin Sommer, who was 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored, in its final at-bat to extend the contest.
The teams battled back and forth the first four frames, before a three-run fifth by UT gave it a three-run cushion. A two-run throwing error by WSU shortstop Ross Oeder and a RBI by redshirt freshman 1B Ryan Laude put the Rockets ahead 8-5 and chased Raiders' starter Chris Coleman.
Refusing to quit, though, WSU tallied six unanswered runs off UT relievers Raul Lopez and Lovell to setup for a dramatic finish.
Several Rockets enjoyed fine offensive afternoon in additions to Sommer. Sophomore 3B Dan Stong finished the day 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while senior DH Jarrod Resendez was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Lovell (0-3) suffered the loss for the Rockets, surrendering six runs (five earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Joe Smith (1-1) was the third WSU pitcher utilized and picked up the win tossing two innings.
Toledo returns to action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 28) when it travels to Rochester, MI to battle Oakland. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
