Toledo Bags Rival Bowling Green, 163-135

Bowling Green, OH - The University of Toledo women's swimming and diving team remains undefeated (3-0) in the MAC after a 163-135 victory over Bowling Green tonight (Nov. 12) at Sam Cooper Natatorium. The Rockets handed the Falcons their second loss of the season making Bowling Green 0-2 on the season, 0-1 in the MAC. Overall, UT improves to 4-0 on the season.
This win marks the second upset the Rockets have given their MAC opponents. The first of which occured on Nov. 6 when Toledo defeated Ohio (128-115). The Bobcats were picked to finish second in the MAC preseason coaches poll. Bowling Green was picked to finish third in the MAC, while Toledo did not even place in the top six on the poll.
"I'm very happy with the way our team has been swimming so far this season," Head Coach Lars Jorgensen said. "It's always harder to win on the road, but the team really fought hard and pulled through with a victory. Everyone showed a lot of heart and character, which is what it takes for a team to win."
Coming through with individual peak-performances for the Rockets were seniors Iiris Hilvo and Emily Markovich, and sophomore Briana Henning. Hilvo led the team with three individual first-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:10.83), 100 breaststroke (1:06.74) and 200 breaststroke (2:20.71). Markovich made headway for UT in the 50 freestyle (24.56) and the 100 freestyle (52.53). Henning, B. also added first-place finishes for the Rockets in the 100 backstroke (59.71) and 200 backstroke (2:07.87).
Hilvo, Markovich and Henning, B. joined up with sophomore Makenzie Manard in the 400 medley relay to sweep the competition with a time of 3:55.99. In the 200 freestyle relay event, Toledo's team of Henning, B., Manard, freshman Elizabeth Hinkleman and Markovich finished in first with a time of 1:37.15, the Rockets' best time of the season so far in that event.
Also contributing to the Rockets' success was freshman Megan McKinley in the diving well. McKinley blew the competition out of the water in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The freshman led her fellow teammate, freshman Jill Reighard, in a one-two sweep of the 1-meter event. McKinley scored a 262.95 on the 1-meter board, while Reighard took second with a 230.10. McKinley's 1-meter diving score surpasses her season-best of 254.85. On the 3-meter board, McKinley was about 60-points ahead of the competition with a score of 275.85. The second-place finisher from Bowling Green posted a 215.17 scoring.
Also scoring points for UT was freshman Chelsea Perkins, who took first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:16.68), second in the 500 freestyle (5:05.12) and third in the 200 IM (2:12.33). Freshman Ashley Tremblay also posted good times for the Rockets, by placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.39) and the 200 backstroke (2:10.33).
Toledo comes back to the Student Recreation Center tomorrow (Nov. 13) to host Oakland at 1:00 p.m.
