TOLEDO, OH - Minnesota Lynx guard Amber Jacobs has been named an interim assistant coach for the Toledo women's basketball program, head coach Mark Ehlen announced. Jacobs' primary duties will include on-the-floor coaching, recruiting and video-exchange responsibilities.
"What impressed me more than her basketball credentials was how outstanding of a person she is," Ehlen said. "Everyone I spoke to raved about her character. And that's the most important thing to me. She is a tenacious player and a hard worker. We're very fortunate to have her join our staff."
Jacobs, a native of Clarks Summitt, PA, recently wrapped up her first year as a member of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx. A third-round selection and the 33rd pick overall at the 2004 WNBA draft, she averaged 3.2 points, 1.5 assists and 1.1 rebounds an outing and played in 32 contests during her first season.
"Her WNBA experience will be invaluable to our young players on this year's squad," said Ehlen, who welcomes seven newcomers in 2004-05. "I think she'll have a great future in the game."
Jacobs became the second Boston College women's basketball player to be selected in the WNBA draft and was the Eagles' highest pick ever.
A four-year starter at Boston College, Jacobs led the Eagles to their first-ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship during her senior year. She was selected an Associated Press honorable mention All-American and was named to the All-Big East second team after averaging 14.7 points and 4.1 assists per game. A senior co-captain, Jacobs led the Eagles to their best record in school history (27-7) in 2003-04 and a repeat trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. Following her four-year career, she finished as BC's fourth-leading scorer (1,544) and fifth in assists (469). She also finished in the top ten of several other statistical categories, including second in three-point field goals made (183), eighth in free throws made (273), sixth in steals (158) and second in games played (123). She also won the three-point shooting title at the 16th Annual Mountain Dew College Slam Dunk & Three-Point Shooting Championships held at the 2004 Men's Final Four in San Antonio. As a junior, Jacobs hit two buzzer-beater shots to land BC in its first-ever Sweet Sixteen.
Jacobs attended Abington Heights High School and finished her career with over 2,400 points, 600 assists and 600 steals. She was a three-time USA Today Honorable Mention All-America selection and a two-time Street & Smith Honorable Mention All-American. As a senior, she was named the USA Today Pennsylvania Player of the Year and was selected Miss Pennsylvania Basketball.
