ATHENS, OH - The University of Toledo women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, defeating Ohio, 67-49, in Mid-American Conference action in the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the Rockets improve to 8-9 overall, 4-2 in the MAC, while the setback drops the Bobcats to 7-9 and 1-4 in the league.
"I thought we played very well," Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen said. "We did a nice job attacking the open court, especially in the second half, and I thought that was the difference in the contest. I also thought we did a nice job in our zone defense denying them a lot of open looks. "
Senior Kelly Walker led three Rockets in double figures with a game-high 21 points and four assists. Walker knocked down 8-of-16 shots from the floor, including 5-of-10 three-point shots. Other Toledo players in double digits were junior Karin Hoogendam and freshman Danielle Bishop with 13 points apiece.
The Rockets utilized a 13-0 run over the course of both halves to erase a two-point deficit and help avoid their first three-game conference losing streak since the 1999-00 season. Trailing 26-24 after a three-point field goal by OU's Andrea Gay with 3:52 remaining in the first half, the Bobcats would be held without a point until Angel Hornsburger converted a layup with 15:14 left in regulation, a span of 8:38.
"I was waiting for us to make a spurt, because the game was tight for most of the first half," Ehlen said. "It was a little scary to have a slim lead for the majority of the game. We made a spurt to end the first half and one to start the second and that seemed to be the difference."
Toledo shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, including an impressive 51.7 percent (15-of-29) in the second half. The Rockets also held a 41-34 advantage in rebounding, to win the battle of the boards in consecutive games for the first time this season.
Erin Isbell and Latreece Bagely led Ohio with 10 points apiece. The Bobcats shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from the field, but only 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the final 20 minutes.
Toledo returns home to host Ball State on Tuesday, Jan. 27 and Northern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 31. Game time for both contests is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Hall.
