My father played at Kent State, my grandfather played at Howard University and my brother-in-law played at Notre Dame so football is kind of deep-rooted in our family. I actually played baseball first, because my dad wouldn't let me play Pee Wee football until fourth grade. Then I talked him into it and it's been my favorite sport ever since.
I like the aggressive play involved with football. The hitting part of football is more up my alley. Playing baseball in high school was a time for me to relax a little and take a break from football.
It was definitely a learning experience and it tested me a lot both mentally and physically. Lining up against a guy that's bigger, stronger and knows the game a little bit better than you taught me how I needed to get off a block and how I needed to play intense every play. Having that game experience and learning how to deal with linemen in the box has helped me a lot this year.
We just wanted to start fresh and establish ourselves as a new crew of linebackers. I learned a lot from David and Tom last year before I moved to defensive end. They taught me about responsibility on and off the field, how to study film and what you have to do on the practice field.
I felt Toledo was the best fit for me. A lot of schools weren't recruiting me very seriously. I thought if a school like Toledo with all of its success was willing to take a chance on me that I would take a chance on them. I liked the school and everything was done in a first-class manner. I also liked the on-campus environment and that the students were involved.
