TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's soccer team fell to George Washington, 4-0, in its home opener today at overcast Scott Park.
With the loss, the Rockets fall to 0-2-0 overall, while the Colonials improve to 1-0-0.
"This is a disappointing loss," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "I think we were both mentally and physically tired, and we were a few steps behind them (George Washington). A credit to them, though, they're a very good team."
The Colonials got off to a quick start scoring their first goal in the 22nd minute of the match. GW's Kim Warner tallied the unassisted goal on a breakaway at 21:25. GW would score one more goal in the first half on a perfectly executed free kick by Ina Kain. Kain placed the free kick right onto Nicole Cavino's foot, who flicked the ball past a stunned UT goalkeeper, Molly Patterson, to make the score 2-0 at the intermission.
George Washington continued to control the game in the second half, notching two more goals, one each by Warner and Sarah Sample to close out the scoring. The Colonials outshot Toledo by a 10-5 margin in the game.
"Despite not getting the results we wanted this weekend, there were a lot of positives from this weekend," Evans said. "We saw that when we are ready to play; we can compete with any team."
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5, when it travels to the Windy City to battle DePaul in non-conference action. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
