Briana Shook Wins National Title in 3000-Meter Steeplechase

Palo Alto, CA - Junior Briana Shook (Tiffin, OH) captured a national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Stanford University's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Shook's winning time of 9:44.71 was the second-fastest ever by an American woman, and the third fastest in the world this year. She now will compete in World Track and Field Championships in Paris in August.
"Briana ran a beautiful race and led wire-to-wire," said UT cross country/track coach Kevin Hadsell. "She took off at the start and was leading by 80 meters at the halfway point. The gap was too huge when anyone else tried to make a move."
Shook, who redshirted this spring in order to help her better prepare for the Olympics next year, beat NCAA champion Kathryn Andersen of Brigham Young by almost three seconds. She is the first female from the Mid-American Conference to win a U.S. national championship in track while still in school.
Shook, who surpassed her personal best in the race by five seconds, was seeded third prior to the event based on her time of 9:49.68, which she ran at the Minnesota Distance Classic on June 7.
