Toledo Routs Arch-Rival Bowling Green, 179-119

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's swimming and diving team defeated arch-rival Bowling Green tonight, 179-119, at the UT Student Recreation Center. With the victory, the Rockets even their record at 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
"This was by far our best meet of the young season," Toledo Head Coach Brian Sharar said. "We swam our best meet tonight, because we needed our girls to get experience in their events. Our girls finally started to fulfill some of the things the coaching staff has been looking for."
The Rockets won 11 of the 16 events on the evening to claim their seventh-straight victory over their arch-nemesis. Toledo brought a well-balanced attack with five different student-athletes winning individual events.
Leading the way were juniors Iiris Hilvo and Emily Markovich with four first-place finishes apiece. Hilvo captured three individual wins, along with a first-place relay finish, while Markovich won two events and was also part of a pair of first-place relay finishes.
Hilvo edged out senior teammate Samantha Keevey for the victory in the 100 breaststroke. Hilvo finished the tight race in 1:07.93, while Keevey was second in 1:08.06. A native of Heinola, Finland, Hilvo also won the 200 breaststroke (2:22.39) with Keevey and senior Lauren Beckett finishing second and third with times of 2:24.32 and 2:25.81, respectively. Hilvo's final individual victory of the evening came in the 200 IM (2:10.16).
In the opening event, the Toledo team of freshman Briana Henning, Hilvo, freshman Makenzie Manard and Markovich captured first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.46.
Individually, Markovich won the 50 free (25.10) and senior Katy Timm and Henning finished second and third with times of 25.17 and 25.20, respectively. Markovich also won the 100 freestyle (54.28), while freshman Makenzie Manard finished second in 55.38.
In the final event of the evening, the Toledo foursome of Markovich, senior Taryn Smyth and freshmen Sara Stech and Mandy Ranc finished in first with a time of 3:40.82.
Smyth captured first place on the 100 backstroke touching the wall in 59.64 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.74, while Manard was second in 1:00.07.
Stech won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.41, while Ranc placed first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:16.71.
The Rockets return to action when they head to Rochester, MI on Thursday, Nov. 20 for a non-conference match-up with Oakland. The meet time is set for 6:00 p.m.
