Toledo, OH - Toledo football coach Tom Amstutz brought in some NFL experience with the hiring of his two new assistant coaches. Amstutz announced the hiring today of former Detroit Lion linebacker Jimmy Williams and current Jacksonville Jaguar assistant Garrick McGee to fill two vacancies on his staff.
Williams replaces Paul Randolph as the team's defensive line coach, while McGee takes over the wide receiver post vacated by Dino Dawson. Randolph left to take an assistant's job at West Virginia, while Dawson assumed an assistant post at Cincinnati.
Williams, a former first-round draft pick out of Nebraska, completed his first season as a college assistant coach in 2001 at Grand Valley State. GVSU finished its season 13-1 and lost in the NCAA Division II championship game to North Dakota, 17-14. Prior to that, Williams was head coach at Pontiac Central High School from 1998-2001 and the defensive coordinator at Pontiac Northern High School from 1993-98.
Williams was the 15th pick of the 1982 draft and played nine seasons with the Lions (1982-90), one with Minnesota and two with Tampa Bay.
McGee, a former Oklahoma quarterback, recently completed his second season with the Jaguars as the offensive quality control coach. His duties included assisting with various aspects of the offense such as offensive game preparation and quarterback preparation. McGee also spent one season as wide receiver coach at Northern Iowa under former UT assistant Mike Dunbar.
McGee, a native of Tulsa, OK, started his collegiate playing career at Arizona State before transferring to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Community College. He then signed with Oklahoma where he was a two-year starter at QB, earning Big Eight Newcomer of the Year honors in 1994.
